The purpose of life

For a long time I have been struggling to determine my purpose in life. I constantly had that question (what if) in mind. What if I did not study and did an acting course instead, what if I started singing, dancing or performing instead of being in the financial industry, what if I went overseas, started my own business......

We can never rely on what if; because you might have been better off or worse off than you are now. People usually make decisions that feel right at the moment in time for their current circumstances. Most people make their decision based on where they want to be and figure out the best road to take with their current mode of transport. Some don’t think of it at all and just go with the flow and see what happens.

For some it is easy, they know from the day they are born what they should study or do with their lives. They do what they are supposed to and are happy. However not everyone is so lucky and there are people out there who will never find what they think their purpose is. Or you may just end up doing what you are placed on earth for without knowing. If we never question the decisions we make or give it some thought how will we know whether we have made the best decisions? Unless maybe if the decisions come back and bite you in the behind.

I think it is good to question things because when you finally make a decision you know that you made it by giving multiple situations some thought and consideration and you hope that the decision you made was an informed one.

Well I am not going to tell you whether your decisions were the best or not because I don’t even know if all my decisions were right. What I can tell you is what I am feeling at this moment and how right the space I am currently in feels.

All of us have a purpose in life, whether we choose it or not, whether it is clear or cryptic, whether it is the open road or the road less travelled. Our purpose in life is to exist, to live and to enjoy life. It sounds stupid because I am not telling you anything. You may ask: how can someone enjoy life if I have no money, if I do not enjoy my work, if my life lacks excitement or that special person?

The truth is that you can enjoy life, you are meant to enjoy life and you are meant to be happy. You just need to learn how to take charge of your life and make yourself happy.

What I am doing at the moment (which works for me) is to constantly tell myself how wonderful my life is and to focus on all the good things in my life. I dream of things I want to achieve and I imagine what it would feel like if I achieved those things. I focus on the small things in life and enjoy them.

I do not allow negativity and negative people to control my life, as soon as I realise that I am being negative I change my thoughts and focus on the good things. I put a good song on and sing to it and laugh at myself when I get the song wrong. Doing these things make me happy and the happier I am the more things happen which makes me happy.

The second thing I do is that I believe in a higher power. It is all around us, inside us and in everything we touch. When I die my energy will become part of this higher power. I can feel it inside me, it completes me. You can call it what you want to. To me the higher power is god and his angels, the angels guide us and keep us safe and god is all around us and inside us. If you choose not to see it you will have a void inside you that nothing can fill; however if you choose to accept it you will be filled with an energy that I cannot describe. To me it is real, I can feel it. Even though I cannot see it I know the higher power is there.

And then lastly I appreciate what I have. The more you see and realise what you have the more you appreciate it. I have a wonderful and loving family, good friends, a good working environment, good health etc. These are things that money cannot buy and these are things that only you can create or attract to your life. I try and give to the less fortunate because it helps you to realise how full your life is.

Life is a wonderful gift; live life to the fullest, don’t look back and regret what was (you cannot change it), focus on the good things in life whether they are big or small, believe and be thankful.
